I know very little about directional dyslexia, though on board with you avoiding an 80 mile drive not only to a city but also an airport (nightmare!) and I have worked with several people who've had other forms of severe dyslexia/dyspraxia and they all talked about the relief of a diagnosis, one of them genuinely thought they were going mad and sought specialist mental health help prior to diagnosis.
