I think it's almost a certainty. He is such a damaged individual, it seems he truly hates himself, and presumably he was brought up to hate and despise gays so likely has never confronted his own sexuality - he's just grown up with an inbuilt certainty that he's a vile person - and it has become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
