Maybe Crandall had reason to say that, or maybe he was just referring to Bensell's early death, but it seems odd to use 'unfulfilled' in the same breath as saying he published a volume of poems - that was surely quite an achievement back then. I know the word is attached to 'promise' rather than 'life' but his use of 'pathetic' suggests a bit of the latter too.
