Not that I know how medium works behind the scenes (who does?) but I have heard of stories being distributed long after original publication date following a surge in external views - it makes sense. Those views make a piece more visible including to algorithms. I agree that it's mean spirited to resent non-paying readers and I also think people who do might be missing a trick.
