There is an extra feeling of insecurity when you are attacked or have an accident in an unfamiliar place, far from home. I empathise with your wife's fears and I'm sure she was very thankful to have you nearby. And I think you are right - nowhere should be judged on a single incident. These things can happen anywhere.
