Turns out it's an ancient but large carpet scrap that's been at the back of the shed for years and was taken out, exactly as you suggest, for covering borders. In fact, had I had my wits about me, I would have linked the fact that several borders have been carpeted for the past couple of weeks. I'm campaigning for the rest of it to return to the shed.
